The Future of Street Photography
Our assignment here is to push the limits of street photography as it is usually defined… I wanted to evoke the sense of alienation of the modern street. Despite the currently fashionable post-modernist “village-style” architecture of places such as Reston and Shirlington, they remain largely, destinations to which we drive in automobiles. Our office parks, suburbs, and single-zoned landuses create isolation. To walk from your office building to a local eatery for lunch might involve navigating a highway overpass.

Nice job on alienation. It would have been nice if you could have gotten her mid stride from the side, showing the akwardness of the road to really bring the point home.
Thanks! I did get some side shots showing I-395 in the background and the wide concrete foreground to capture the effect you mention. I selected this one for the sky and the sense of everything being much bigger than human scale!
I like both shots. The first does a good job of conveying a feeling of emptiness, a “concrete canyon.” The second is a nice depiction of fun and human interaction, even a sense of community, contrary to the first image.
Ansu! I love this photograph. The woman has a look of desolation on her face in a lonely and empty place. Despite having no cars zooming by her, you can sense the danger in her chosen path. Very well done!
Good shot and description! I feel like I’m on the tightrope walk doing a balancing act right along with her…. What came first the streets or feets?
It is a shock to see this well dressed business woman in such a desolate situation with such a foreboding sky. The wide angle enhances the feeling. Well done. Did you put yourself at risk to get this photo? Was it a found situation?
This is powerful! The sky does add to the uneasy, foreboding feeling. Some of your strongest images are based on very direct description, rather than action. I like how this takes the previous image you posted of the woman in the street much further.
I love this! I love the mood that it gives off plus the lone woman on the highway! How did you manage to not get any cars?? This only adds I think to the concept. You did a great job getting the perfect shot to express yourself!
